What is GEO? The marketer's guide to Generative Engine Optimization

Every day, millions of buying journeys start with a question to an AI assistant rather than a search bar. The answer those buyers receive is a synthesis, a shortlist, an opinion. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of measuring and improving how your brand appears in those answers.
GEO is not SEO with a new name
SEO optimises pages to rank in a list of links. GEO optimises a brand's presence inside generated answers. The unit of work changes: prompts instead of keywords, answers instead of rankings, citations instead of backlinks. A brand can dominate page one of Google and be absent from the shortlist ChatGPT writes for the same question.
The five metrics that matter
Visibility is the share of relevant AI answers that mention your brand. Position is where you rank when you do appear: being cited fifth is not being cited. Sentiment is how the model frames you, endorsement or caveat. Citations are the sources the model leaned on. Gaps are high-intent prompts where nobody owns the answer yet, the cheapest ground to win.
How answers get assembled
Models combine training knowledge with retrieved sources: review platforms, editorial media, user communities, your own site. That citation economy is where GEO is played. Brands that are consistently present in the sources models trust enter the answers; brands that are not, do not, whatever their advertising spend.
Starting to measure
Define the questions your buyers actually ask, by market and language. Run them daily across the major models, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and DeepSeek. Benchmark against the competitors that matter, and track the deltas. Measurement turns an anxious conversation ("what does AI say about us?") into an operating metric your team can move.
From measurement to action
GEO actions look like brand and content work with a new compass: win the review sites and communities your category's models cite, publish content that answers the gap prompts, fix the framing that drives negative sentiment. Measured weekly, those moves compound, and they show up in the only place your buyers now look: the answer.
