Where soft drink buyers actually start their search

Foodservice buyers researching soft drink suppliers increasingly start with a question to an AI assistant, not a search engine or a trade show floor. We ran a category audit across the major models to see who actually wins that first conversation.
The prompts that matter
"Best soft drink brands for restaurants", "Coca-Cola vs Pepsi for foodservice", "top zero-sugar sodas in 2026", the questions buyers ask are comparative and specific to their context, not generic category queries. That specificity is exactly where GEO plays out.
Who gets cited, and why
Established brands with strong retail and review-site footprints dominate awareness prompts. But on consideration-stage questions, zero-sugar, foodservice-specific, regional, the field opens up considerably, and smaller or challenger brands with focused editorial coverage can match or beat incumbents.
The gap nobody owns yet
Across every model tested, foodservice-specific comparison prompts had the lowest citation density of any segment in the category, meaning most brands are simply absent when the question gets specific. That's the opening: category leaders are optimising for awareness prompts while consideration-stage questions go largely unanswered.
What this means beyond soft drinks
The pattern holds across CPG broadly: the more specific and comparative the buyer's question, the more the field opens up for brands willing to publish comparison-ready, source-worthy content. Category leadership on Google doesn't guarantee category leadership in the answer.
